This chart plots population density change in the Detroit metro area in a non-geospatial way. It can be hard to fully grasp just how many Census tracts lost significant amounts of people when you're reading a map that covers such a large area. This histogram gives us another way to look at it, and hopefully to better understand what happened.
Each bar on this histogram represents a five percent change in population density between 1970 and 2010 - except the yellow bars, which cover much larger ranges. The height of each bar represents the number of Census tracts in the metro area that experienced a population density change in that range.
Mouse over any bar to get a more detailed look at the underlying data.
